- 2020-03-06-

The physical and chemical properties of barium sulfate: Barium sulfate is a white or off-white crystalline powder. It is an important barium-containing mineral. It has strong chemical indolence, good stability, acid and alkali resistance, high density, moderate hardness, high specific gravity and high whiteness. It can absorb harmful rays (X-ray and Y-ray) and other advantages. It has the luster of glass, non-magnetic and non-toxic. And it has environmentally friendly materials, so it is widely used in various coatings, inks, rubber, paper, ceramics, cosmetics, etc. Refined barium sulfate is also used in paints, engineering plastics (household appliances, building materials plastics), insulating rubber, rubber products, battery cathode expansion rods, and also used in ceramics and enamel glaze materials.

Deposited barium sulfate is used as a filler, face-lifting agent, and aggravating agent in rubber, plastic, paper, paint, ink, coating and other industries. Barium sulfate can effectively shield X-rays and Y-rays when used to decorate internal and external walls, and can effectively prevent radiation leakage.

The effect of barium sulfate on titanium dioxide and the gaskets in the paint can reduce the amount of pigment added and save about 10% of the cost.

Applying barium sulfate (about 25%) to PP looks like ABS, and does not affect the existing characteristics of PPV, providing gloss and high hardness appearance.

Barium sulfate can reach 80% filling rate of its weight. It can effectively block noise and noise when used in drain pipes, speakers, and speakers. Barium sulfate can add dramatic amounts when used in window cloth. Used in the shell of household appliances, it can improve the advantages of gloss, good color, surface scratch resistance, and good size stability.

Barium sulfate is used as an extender pigment in Tuchai Zhong. It plays an important role in improving coating thickness, abrasion resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, surface hardness and impact resistance. In addition, barium sulfate has high reflectivity in the wavelength range of 300-400 microns, can protect the paint film from light aging, and is a useful and inexpensive white inorganic light stabilizer. Because of its low oil absorption and high filling capacity, it can reduce the cost of coatings and can be used for water-based coatings, primers, intermediate coatings, oil-based coatings, etc. Use it to replace 10%-25% of the titanium dioxide in the water-based coating. As a result, the whiteness improvement concealment rate did not decrease.

Paint and high-build coatings: Barium sulfate has high filling properties and can be used in all types of coatings, such as primers, thick-build coatings, etc. Its ratio of surface area and particle size division and easy flowability make barium sulfate in processing It has low abrasion in the process, and barium sulfate is recommended for the outer surface of the automatic primer, and even at high filling, it also maintains a good uniformity and lubricity.

Topcoat: Barium sulfate is superior to most other fillers, especially in chemical-resistant coatings. It is lazy, insoluble in water, acid, alkali and organic intermediary. Its good gloss and particle precision make the topcoat better It can be maintained when exposed for a long time. Barium sulfate is recommended for top coats, which can add surface hardness and color stability.

Latex paint: Because of its weight, barium sulfate can only be used in latex paint, mainly used for high gloss and silk paint. It is also known as "acid-resistant" latex paint. It is also acid-resistant when exposed. Barium sulfate is easy to disperse. Optical rotation and easy retention can add its chemical function, barium sulfate can be used in the same high-gloss paint and latex paint.

Wood products and paints: Barium sulfate has the characteristics of low cohesion, low light dispersion and precise particle retention. It is especially suitable for pigment topcoats, varnishes, spray paints, etc. According to research, barium sulfate has chemical resistance and weather resistance.

Powder coating: In powder coating, barium sulfate can improve its gloss, fluidity, filling and compatibility with various pigments.

The ultra-fine barium sulfate has a superior isolation effect on the particles of white or colored pigments, which makes the particles of the pigments adhere to a certain distance between each other, which improves the power of the pigment. In particular, the barium sulfate particles are small and have excellent functions. They can free the net-like space formed by the titanium dioxide in the ink and paint, which greatly improves the weather resistance of the ink and paint, and improves the quality of the paint; Impurities will react chemically with the ink and organic substances in the paint; in addition, it has excellent dispersibility in all paints, which can prevent the paint from agglomerating, improve the quality of the paint, and add fluidity.

Adhesive: good rheology, filling and chemical resistance, making barium sulfate suitable for adhesives, unsaturated polyester and polyurethane systems.

Elastomers, seals: Barium sulfate is especially suitable for elastomers. It does not contain any heavy metal pollution or rubber poisonous gas, so it is especially suitable for food and medicine, and can provide its stability and anti-aging functions.

Thermosetting body: Barium sulfate has laziness, color stability, and can be combined with other pigments to obtain better gloss, mechanical door head groove performance and low abrasion.

Thermoplastics: Thermal conductivity and easy fluidity can reduce the injection molding time. Barium sulfate can be used as a nucleating agent to improve its strength and thermal stability.

Pigment: light reflection can maintain the perfect color of the pigment.

Using the above functions, it can replace part of the titanium dioxide without affecting the quality of the coating

The detailed application scope is as follows

Deposited barium sulfate can be used as a supplementary filler, widely used in various coatings, plastics, rubber, paints, inks, insulating tape, ceramics, batteries, enamel and other industries. It can be used for acid-resistant rubber products and general products. It can also be used as a surface coating agent, sizing agent, aggravating agent, etc.

Plastic industry-depositing barium sulfate as a gasket for titanium dioxide and pigments in plastics can reduce the amount of pigments added and save about 10% of the cost.

Rubber industry--applying deposited barium sulfate (about 25%) to PP can make PP look like ABS without affecting the existing characteristics of PP, providing a high gloss and high hardness appearance. Deposited barium sulfate can reach a filling rate of 80% of its weight. It can effectively block noise and noise when used in drainage pipes, speakers, and speakers. Deposited barium sulfate N can add dramatic amounts when used in window cloth. Used in the shell of household appliances, it can provide high gloss, good color, scratch resistance, good dimensional stability, etc.

Topcoat industry---deposited barium sulfate is superior to most other fillers, especially in chemical resistant coatings. It is lazy, insoluble in water, acid, alkali and organic intermediary. Good gloss and particle precision make The top coat can be maintained during long exposure. Deposited barium sulfate is recommended for top coat, which can add surface hardness and stable color.

Printing inks-low abrasion, high gloss and color stability, low cohesion, combined with its easy flowability makes barium sulfate suitable for high-quality printing inks, deposited barium sulfate is recommended for high optical rotation oils.

Latex paint industry-because of its weight, deposited barium sulfate can only be used in latex paint, mainly used for high gloss and silk paint, and is called "acid resistant" latex paint. Even when exposed, it also has acid resistance. Deposited sulfuric acid Barium's easy dispersion, optical retention and easy retention can add its chemical functions. Deposited barium sulfate can be used for high-gloss paint and latex paint

Lacquer and high-build coatings--deposited barium sulfate has high filling properties and can be applied to all types of painting series, such as primers, high-build coatings, etc., with its low specific surface area and particle size division and easy flowability. So that the deposited barium sulfate has low abrasion during the processing process. The deposited barium sulfate is recommended for the outer surface of the automatic primer, and even maintains a good uniformity and lubricity even at high filling.

Wood products and paints---deposited barium sulfate has the characteristics of low cohesion, low light dispersion and precise particles, especially suitable for pigment topcoats, varnishes, spray paints, etc. According to research, deposited barium sulfate has chemical resistance and weather resistance.

Regarding the high-solids glossy finish, it is necessary to use deposited barium sulfate with a particle size of about 0.7-0.8μm. Using a larger particle grade will affect the appearance of gloss. The grade of smaller particles is affected by the higher specific surface area, so it needs to use more base material, so high filling ratio and high solid content are almost impossible.

The deposited barium sulfate with a particle size of 0.7μm can resist flocculation and separation of pigments, and then can reduce the amount of pigments to an extremely low value. In practice, because 0.7μm deposited barium sulfate has no effect on viscosity in a wide range, it can be formulated according to the high proportion of deposited barium sulfate in the given formula, and it has no effect on gloss. As a result, these deposited barium sulfate provide a good opportunity for reducing VOC and because it replaces more expensive pigments for reducing formulation costs.

In addition to white or bright color paint, it is worth mentioning that white powdery deposited barium sulfate can also be used for pure black paint without affecting the black color. This is related to the refractive index of the deposited barium sulfate, which is similar to the refractive index of common resins, so that the deposited barium sulfate incorporated into the system is not white but transparent. Therefore, it will not produce light gray in carbon black coating. Depositing barium sulfate can also reduce the VOC of black paint. The effect here is that the oil absorption and specific surface area of carbon black and deposited barium sulfate are very different. After deflocculation, the useful effect of carbon black can only be added slightly, and replacing a lot of carbon black with deposited barium sulfate will reduce the total base material demand and viscosity, thereby reducing VOC.

Deposition of barium sulfate for powder coatings

Powder coatings are one of the fast-growing markets in the coatings industry. Because the deposited barium sulfate has special functions, low base material requirements and excellent dispersibility, it becomes an indispensable component of powder coatings. The specific gravity of deposited barium sulfate is as high as titanium dioxide, which gives us the opportunity to configure non-flying paint powder coating formulations, even when selecting fine powders. The mechanical function of the powder coating filled with barium sulfate deposited in a typical powder coating formulation is related to the particle size (the finer the function, the better).

Deposition of barium sulfate for water-based paint

Because of the chemical laziness and insolubility of deposited barium sulfate, it is equally applicable to water-based paints as it is to conventional paints. The effect of micronized deposition of barium sulfate has been proven, even in electrophoretic coating (electrophoretic coatings have very complicated requirements for particle deposition or wettability). Generally, the replacement amount of titanium dioxide is in the scale of 10-30%.
